The Story Behind the Project

The Women's Bean Project employs women who come from backgrounds of chronic unemployment and poverty, and helps them develop the work and interpersonal skills needed to function independently in the workplace and community.

Poverty and chronic unemployment are caused by a constellation of issues--lack of education, single parenthood, history of addiction and incarceration, poor problem solving--that magnify one another and are repeated across generations.

Women's Bean Project is a social enterprise that offers a transitional job in gourmet food manufacturing designed to provide immediate income, arrange support services to overcome barriers to employment, and teach the job readiness skills needed to get and keep a job.

Since 1989, Women's Bean Project has helped women develop the work and interpersonal skills and address the basic needs required for moving up the path toward personal and economic self sufficiency. With this stepping stone toward success, the women will be able to support themselves and their families, and create stronger role models for future generations.

The handcrafted nature of this product will produce minor differences in design and sizing. Subtle variations will occur from piece to piece, adding to its unique qualities. Measurements may vary slightly.

The recepients of these gifts were very appreciative. In fact, I gave the Women's Bean Project gifts to four friends. They all really liked it. I have to order one for myself now. The next time I need a gift for someone, I would definitely order this again. Everyone like the fact that there was a charitable connection to this gift. I would give it 4 Stars for now & hopefully 5 stars after I try it myself.

This is a great gift for people who like to cook and who are socially conscious. I gave this product to my relatives for Christmas 2006. The recipients loved the gift so much (they called to thank me a second time after having cooked with the beans). Since the gift went over so well, this past holiday I was happy to purchase it again.
