Rich and Elegant but Challenging to Assemble (KellyCat, Rockville, MD, 2008-04-08)

I read all 40 product reviews on this site before I ordered and so I was under no illusion that the assembly would be a breeze, though I had no reservations about the appearance and the quality of the console table. I even printed out two sets of reviewer comments referring to some mistake(s) in the assembly instructions so my boyfriend and I could familiarize ourselves for the task that lied before us. First, let me say that my faith in the reviewers' comments about the quality and appearance of the product was well placed: the console table is simply beautiful after it's been assembled. But the process was painful, to say the least. It took my boyfriend a total of 2.5 hours the first evening to put it together and then another hour of redoing the drawer slides/rails the next morning. And that's WITH the benefit of advance warnings from reviewers about mistakes in the manufacturer's instructions. The bottomline is this: When you get towards the end of the assembly instructions where they start talking about how the drawer slides should be fitted into the empty compartment for the drawers, just know that the left and right slides as pictured and described in the instructions are reversed. Once you reverse the left and right drawer slides (doing the opposite of what's instructed), then the drawers will go in (and pull out) properly. Again, I'm referring to the slides THAT GO INSIDE THE EMPTY COMPARTMENT THAT HOUSES THE DRAWERS. Two reviewers here commented on problems with the instructions except that they didn't include the specifics. I would still recommend this console table despite the sloppy instructions. Great quality (moviechic, New Ulm, Minnesota, 2008-05-27)

I just recieved and assembled this console. It is so much nicer than the photo indicates. I read several reviews so I had a drill and a tiny drill bit handy for drilling a few pilot holes on the drawers and back facing and it made the assembly go so much easier. All the parts were included and directions were reasonably easy to follow. It does take 2 people to assemble this console as the components are heavy and a second person is required to help flip the unit over a few times during assembly. I looked and looked for a contemporary console in Minneapolis and surrounding areas and could not find what I wanted at at decent price. I stumbled on this item at Overstock and gotta tell you the Wakefield console is a fabulous item at a exceptional price. You cant go wrong with this unit. Just be very careful when attaching the drawer handles as they take a little bit of finessing or you will scratch the finish. You may want to protect the area where the handles go with a bit of tape then remove the tape once you have the handles on. Be patient installing the handles, dont force them and you will be pleased with the end results. The color of the unit blends perfectly with our other espresso finished tables. Be aware its a very dark, almost black finish. You wont be disappointed with this piece!

Perfect (NappyD, Tacoma, WA, 2008-06-14)

Perfect. What more can I say? I needed a stand for my flat screen and this was the perfect size, style and color. You're probably apprehensive about ordering over the Internet. Don't be. I can't imagine you will be disappointed with this piece. A few words to the wise. Yes, as others have stated, it takes awhile to put together (3 hours for me and I'm really good at stuff like that) but the directions are laid out great. Some of the hardware can be difficult to install. Just be sure to have a medium sized standard screwdriver as well as a Phillips. I know they say the Phillips works but I found the standard makes it much easier for most. Also, you have to attach the drawer slides yourself and there are no pre-drilled holes for this. Make sure you take your time with this because it's the very last step and after 3 hours you want to just be done, but it will make or break how the table looks. Oh and in case you're wondering, my flat screen is a 46" with a super-thin bezel and it looks great on this table. I would think a 40" and a 52" would look great too, although the 52" will probably hang over the sides. Anything larger than 52" and I would say this is not the table for you. (Or you can trade me TV's and let me worry about finding the right size table! Haha!) Good luck!

Excellent Product (NinerFan, East Bay, California, 2008-05-04)

My wife and were looking for a modern console table for quite some time and stumbled upon this one at Overstock. This table is very impressive. It looks simply outstanding in our living room. The various components are very solid and it is well made. The drawer rail hardware is surprisingly good. It took my wife and I about two hours to assemble the table from start to finish. One word of caution: when you attach the rails to the drawers, be very careful. Although the rest of the table has pre-drilled holes which are very convenient, there are no pre-drilled holes for attaching the rails to the drawer sides. And this would have been helpful. The drawer sides are seemingly a very soft wood product, and the wood split slightly when I screwed the rails into the wood. I was extremely careful, yet this happened with each of the drawers. In hindsight, I should have pre-drilled the holes with a small drill-bit myself and this would have avoided the problem. However, despite that minor problem, I would highly recommend this table. The finished product truly looks excellent.

Beautiful Piece but Primitive Directions (SmartShoppah, Miami Beach, FL, 2008-01-16)

This piece is significantly nicer than a similar, much more expensive piece that I bought from a Major Upscale Retail Store and the Wakefield Console Table for a few hundred bucks is heavier, stronger, more solid and has better mechanics. BUT, the BIG "but" is that the directions to put it together are not very detailed. I put it together by myself but I'm strong enough to lift the larger pieces on my own. Otherwise it definitely will take two people. PLEASE NOTE: The drawer slides must be put in with the slides face up otherwise the drawers will be upside down and not fit. I had the slides upside down so I simply unscrewed them and put them in the right way. It added about 10 minutes to the process but now it's done and I'm very satisfied! It takes about 2 or 3 hours to assemble the console so organize your pieces, find a football game or good movie as a background distraction and start building! You save about a $1,000 versus the retail, assembled price and you get a great sense of accomplishment! Don't be afraid!
