Microscope was a Macro-hit! (McPenguin5, Lanham, MD, 2008-01-13)

My huband and I always have problems trying to buy presents for our grandson. He is ten, and already has almost everything a kid could want. I always find it useful when I am trying to think of a present for someone to cruise through the Overstock website to get ideas. When I saw this microscope, I knew that this was the gift. Our grandson was thrilled with the microscope. He is very interested in nature and science. The microscope is everything I would expect from Vivitar... well constructed and genuinely useable, no mere toy. I know he will spend many hours using this and learning with it. Thank you Overstock for not only giving us such great bargains, but giving me a place to search for the perfect gift for those loved ones who are so hard to buy for.

Somewhat fragile (Fatherone, Bountiful, UT, 2008-01-14)

The product is what you would expect for the money. The light does not work reliably, and when it does, it is not bright enough to use. The mirror is adequate to allow samples to be viewed, if light is available to be directed up through the sample. All that aside, the microscope has been successful in letting my 14 year old son explore items under magnification. From my perspective, this is a very acceptable value for the money. The first thing my son did was drive the largest lens into the sample; knowing that risk, he now is more careful in using his microscope.

Vivitar 28-piece microscope set (Majeca08, Orlando, Florida, 2008-01-05)

This product is a major disappointment. Construction is shoddy at best. The light works only if it's held down which means that all you see is a finger, not the slide. The slides don't even remotely look real. This product is so much less than was advertised...I would have never purchased it for my precocious 10-year old had I known how bad it was! I will have to replace it with another microscope set that is substantially better in quality. Don't buy it!

Microscope would not work after 2nd day. (Momma36, CA, 2008-01-13)

My son was very excited to get this kit for Christmas. The microscope worked on Christmas day, but the next day, the light on the microscope just quit working. We changed the batteries (which were only 1 day old!) and the lightbulb, but nothing worked. So we can only guess that there is something wrong with the wires or connection. We were very disappointed with this product.

Vivitar microscope (phylsie, Kansas, 2008-01-11)

I bought 2 of these microscopes & neither worked when opened on Xmas eve. One "dad" got his son's to finally work, but I don't know if it's still working. It's 2 weeks after Xmas & the 2nd microscope was brought today for Grandpa to see if he can get it working. A disappointment to me especially with the Vivitar brand.
