Considered one of the most talented painters in the Dutch Golden Age, Johannes Vermeer shows everyday life in the city of Delft in the Netherlands. Forgotten for centuries after his death in 1675, Vermeer is now highly regarded as one of the greats in painting. Rediscovered in the late 19th century, little is known about Vermeer's life and only a small number of his paintings have been preserved.

Christened the 'Mona Lisa of the North,' by the Dutch art scholar Ludwig Goldschieder, the Girl with a Pearl Earring is universally recognized as one of Johannes Vermeer's absolute masterworks. After its sale in 1902, this picture quickly gained enormous popularity and was reputed to be Vermeer's most beautiful work. Both the Mona Lisa and Girl with a Pearl Earring have elusive qualities and an indecipherable expression. Both paintings are engaging. It appears as if the subject of the painting is not so much the woman we observe, but the relationship which she solicits with the viewer. This may be the reason for the immense popularity of the work.

Not What You'd Think (mle505, Colorado, 2008-04-02)

The frame is beautiful and the portrait a perfect size - but my canvas wasn't stretched completely taught - leaving a wave in the middle of the painting. The girl's face turned out looking yellow-green and you see the original painting's cracked paint in this print - something I think they should have disclosed in the description - although I understand why it looks that way. I returned it within a week - I just couldn't justify keeping it, aside from the great price, for its flaws.

I bought this for my mother as a Christmas present because she had an old ugly poster of the Vermeer painting in her room. It was a little smaller than what I expected, but the quality and the frame were wonderful.
