Product Description

Carved from native African sesse wood, the unique designed traditional African tribal bench is both comfortable and a work of art. It's sure to be a functional conversation piece for years to come.

This decorated bench is the ancient tribal chair used during dinner times in the villages and small towns in Africa, particularly among the Akan tribes of Ghana. It's history dates back thousands of years, and is still a common furniture piece in Ghana tody.

The Story Behind the Product

Akwasi Agyeman was born into a family of 12 children in the small tribal village of Foase in Ghana, West Africa. The family was so poor that Akwasi was limited to only a 7th grade education in order to help his father farm to feed the family. In 7th grade his teacher asked each of them to make something for art class. Akwasi produced a Fertility Doll as his project and amazed the teacher. Akwasi knew then he had a natural talent for carving. After ten years and with the help of Fair trade Akwasi is now married with two handsome boys. He employs 15 people and has built a small three bedroom house for his family. Akwasi and his fellow artisans hope you enjoy their work.

Beautiful, earthy, ACCENT bench (Exnyker, Rockville, MD, 2008-04-21)

I capitalized ACCENT in my review title, because this is what I feel the bench is - a beautiful, earthy, accent bench. And... I love it. If you're looking a bench sturdy & secure enough for people to sit on? I'm not sure this is for you. I didn't get the bench for that purpose. I needed something to put in an area of a room that needed "something" - and this is perfect for that use. Yes - it's secure enough to put plants on (but why cover the artwork on the seat?), and may even be sturdy enough to sit down on (I've not even sat on the bench - it's a little low for me, anyway). And, I'm not saying the bench is wobbly - I don't feel it is. But, there are benches clearly made to be sat on, and there are benches clearly made to be looked at - and this falls into the latter. The colors of the bench are wonderful - warm. The look of the bench is terrific. It really dressed up an area (funny... "primitive" dresses up an area" - but it's true) - the room suddenly "made sense" when I placed this bench under a window. Would I get this again? In a heartbeat. I love it.

A Beautiful Item!! (surelyall126, West Reading, PA, 2008-07-30)

This piece is a nicely crafted and handpainted. I have received several comments from people about the uniqueness of the piece. It is an accent table that I will be displaying in my living room. I would recommend this table if you are interested in African artifacts. Thank you for a beautiful product!!

Charrming bench (Marmorado, Albuquerque, NM, 2008-04-30)

The bench is attractive and sturdy. My only disappointment was that it was smaller than I had imagined. It is really more a decorative item than a practical piece of furniture, although a child could certainly sit on it comfortably.

Colorful (Twig, Iowa, 2008-03-31)

This is a nice bench, quite solid. It is too small for a good end table, but works well on our screen porch - a place to set a book or a drink. It is distinctive, colorful, and a nice conversation piece.

Traditional African Tribal Bench (Ghana) (Brightlight, Renton, WA, 2008-05-30)

I received the bench and it was well packed and completely assembled. It was much smaller than I expected it to be, but it is cute and still fits my decor scheme.
