Product Description
Greg Mortenson recounts his experiences as co-founder of the Central Asia Institute, a nongovernmental organization that, since the 1990s, has done exemplary work in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where it has built and operated schools and improved public health. He tells how, by working side-by-side, the villagers and the staff of the CAI have overcome challenges, drawn on strengths, and worked toward breaking down the ignorance and prejudice that might otherwise have divided them. It has not been easy and the need is great, says Mortenson, and underscores the fact that the positive work of NGOs like the Central Asia Institute can go far in fighting terrorism.

An amazing read . . . (Ahya, San Diego, CA, 2008-04-08)

This book makes you think of so many things on so many different levels. You have a man who is passionate about his work, no matter where it takes him. And he's still alive--a real live amazing hero or humanitarian . . . check out his website directly by Googling Three Cups of Tea. Then you have the other side of Muslim, the one that American media doesn't show us--the one where they are good people who just want to live a decent life and live in peace. It's very eye opening, especially after the last 8 years of having our service men and women over in this region of the world--understanding the desolation and the terrain makes it that much clearer as to why this battle may never cease. And lastly, the biggest point of them all, which I believe applies not only to the rural and remote locations that he's doing his main work in, but applies to us here in America as well: The simple truth that education is the first step to ending terrorism. Who would have known the first step could be that simple?

Everyone should read this book! (10Shirl, Tn., 2008-03-15)

I cannot tell you how much I admire Greg Mortenson for what he has chosen to do as his life's work. This book is so beautifully written by himself and David Relin that I felt that I was there too. I loved the pictures included in the book of the wonderful and interesting people who he met during his journeys to Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was so nice to see the faces of the people who became so special to him. I know how much they must have loved, trusted and admired him for what he was trying to do to improve their lives. I found the political aspect of the book very educational and enlightening as well. I was sorry for the book to end. I will remember it for a long time. My only regret is that I do not have a million dollars to contribute to the CAI------for, alas, I am poor.

Three Cups of Tea (Leslei, Olympia, WA, 2008-02-22)

A stunning book! Part breathtaking adventure yarn, part journalism/history in the making, part inspirational tale of a man who's sort of stumbled into a passionate mission that consumes his life--and has probably been a more effective weapon in the war on terror than all the world's guns and bombs. Greg Mortenson builds schools, especially schools to educate girls. And he does it in Pakistan and Afghanistan, in Muslim villages and with the blessing of the Islamic Council, using donated local labor, listening to what small isolated communities need, so that the school building becomes community building becomes bridge building. A great read, an inspiring story, maybe a blueprint of sorts for a better world.

Three Cups of Tea (Barb5039, Tigard, Oregon, 2008-02-01)

This is a well written book that would appeal especially to those with interest in mountain climbing and children. It shows how one person can change the world. Greg Mortenson is a unique individual who stuck with his promises at great personal cost. The writer brought to life the mountains of Pakistan and the awesome feeling that not only those who climb but most people experience when seeing this beautiful land. He contrasts it with the poveerty of the area and the dire need that is a call to all to help the children.

I'd read it again! (MusicLover2, Buffalo, NY, 2008-03-28)

Pakistan and Afghanisan have been out of my world view in the past, but this book introduced me to the very human side of the people in those countries. It also gave me a better understanding of Muslim culture and I came away feeling more optimistic about the world. Very well written, engaging book. I even bought an extra copy for my sister-in-law who is an avid reader and plan to circulate my copy among friends.
