Spaceman Spiff to the rescue! (RagtopDwarf, Los Angeles, CA, 2008-01-20)

How can you not love Calvin and Hobbes? Somehow, Bill Waterston manages to make a six-year-old's imaginary conversations with his stuffed tiger have substance, erudition (far beyond a typical grade schooler), and a wry sense of humor! You know that most kids in the third grade wouldn't even recognize these words as English, but Bill makes us suspend that bit of logic and follow Calvin's logic through to its often-tragic end. But Waterston doesn't leave the duo without supervision: he also keeps us in touch with Calvin's long-suffering parents (who remain sane and functional because they also have good imaginations and respond with their own sometimes-sarcastic wit), his teacher (who seems oblivious to the fact that Calvin sees her as as space alien enemy of Spaceman Spiff), and even his poor pediatrician. I admit that the entire 10-year run of comics was the reason I purchased the set (3 hardback volumes in a matching case), but a pleasant surprise was the forward from the artist, explaining how Calvin came to be and the struggles of getting him and his tiger pal in our newspapers' comic pages. Reading his explanation of his standard of excellence for the strip -- and his eventual ending of it to preserve this standard -- made me forgive him for that painful (on my part) act and admire him even more. BUY THIS SET!!!! It's a great item and this is a FANTASTIC price!

The days are just filled (barkerman32, Big Rapids, MI, 2008-04-23)

This is an excellent and very heavy collection. The packaging and presentation is nice and clean, it contains every "C and H" cartoon plus the extras including poems and stories, and a history of Waterson, how he got started and how he ended up writing the wonderful "Calvin and Hobbes". It's easily one of the nicest collections of it's kind that I've seen and the it's worth every cent. The only complaint would be the box Overstock sent it in. It was packaged with the Gary Larson set, very very heavy together, in a flimsy box that nearly broke apart when I picked it up out of the back of the mail driver's vehicle. I'm surprised the sets weren't damaged as they were sliding around and very awkward because they were so loosely packaged and there was so little packaging material. But they did arrived unharmed. Keep in mind they are very heavy to hold for any length of time. You might want to have a reading table available when you start. This set comes highly recommended.

Huge Calvin and Hobbs (dummyncc, Auburn, Maine, 2008-02-02)

I could only grant three stars, as what information do we actually learn about anything from Calvin and Hobbs? My son, 25, received this as a Christmas gift and was overwhelmed by the size. It is huge. When they say the Complete Calvin and Hobbs, make no mistake, it is complete. Think it comes in at around 20 pounds. If you're a fan, you will again enjoy Calvin's insight on life, everything revolves around him. Hobbs through no fault of his own, is forced to go along. The various snowmen and the babysitter strips are favorites. Wholeheartedly recommend to anyone in need of a chuckle.

Calvin and Hobbes (smrtgirl, Houston, TX, 2008-05-21)

I purchased this for my husband and he loves it! His only concern is that the books are glued together instead of sewn, so the pages can come out easier. However, it has all of the comic books, and is in a larger print, making it easier to read. I would have liked more information about the quality of the product. The pages look great and will hopefully stay that way. It was also great that it came as quickly as it did. Overstock really was the cheapest too.

Self contained (Bertmg, San Diego, CA, 2008-02-18)

Nothing better than having ALL the "Far side" humor in your library. The books are way to heavy, I wish they were 4 instead of two or a lighter paper. Because I take the book before to bed. It makes me wake up in a good humor the next day.
