diminished expectations (camp21, , 2008-03-30)

I wasn't aware until I began shopping online for a replacement VCR that is's almost impossible to find one anymore. After several long sessions of looking, this was my choice. It is the flimsiest VCR I've ever purchased, so lightweight that when I attached the cables to the back of it, the front tilted up off the shelf. As far as I can tell after a couple weeks, it works fine. Sound and picture are good. Setup was ok, the remote works fine. But as other reviewers have said, these machines have been drastically dumbed down. Whatever happened to the middle recording/playback speed? (I haven't tried to play an LP tape on it yet.) There is no display on the machine at all except a light that tells you it's on. If you want to track where you are when playing or rewinding you have to use the on-screen display, which is distracting. The rewind is slow compared to the Sony it replaced. Frankly my biggest worry is that the thing is so flimsy and light it's not going to last. And of course it's "refurbished" which means it's already stopped working once. That said, by the diminished expectations you have to judge these machines by these days, this is a satifactory machine. I'm tempted to buy another and just stick it up in the closet, but next time I'll probably be buying a DVD recorder.

FINALLY FOUND VCR! (SEEKINGVCR, Fairfield Cty, Ct., 2008-03-26)

Was desperately looking for a VCR as the VCRs in the VCR/DVD combos do NOT have a tuner. This VCR has a tuner. It's just like the ones we had when VCRs reigned. An easy to use remote control is also enclosed. The product is very easy to set up and operate. I scanned through the instructions and they were quite simple to understand. I've only had the unit for a few days but have recorded various programs and the audio/video quality is good. The timer function is also easy to use and up to 8 programs can be set up to record on the timer. To hook up the unit all I had to do is run my cable line/ connection wire (I have basic cable-no cable box) into the VCR, then I ran the the cable that came with the unit into the TV where it said antenna--simple. The VCR is light weight and should not cause placement problems. As for Overstock's service==excellent. The product was received very quickly and the shipping fee was quite reasonable. Ordering was also problem free. Now the only questions remains--will the unit hold up to the test of time? That remains to be seen.

Nice! (connie5280, TX, 2008-02-23)

Visited 3 different nationally prominent stores in my area - none carry simple VCRs. The staff said they are not made anymore. The dvd/vcr combos offered were either expensive or stated that a "satellite or cable" tuner is required to record over the air programs. Since I use an antenna, it was beginning to look like a $200+ purchase - enough to make me start thinking about basic cable. In desperation I tried an internet search and came up with this offering at Overstock.com . My main reason for selecting this model was simply that the specifications clearly state that it has a tuner and accepts RF input amd output signal (which I interpreted as coax) - none of the other offerings indicated what kind of connections they would take and I did not want to buy converters. Ordered Wednesday, arrived Saturday (today). Set up in 10 minutes, plays great, records great. All for a great price. The only problem - tried to order a second one (as a spare) today and they are sold out!

Worth getting? (PakRatt, , 2008-03-13)

Yes, they are worth getting for several reasons. VCR's are are quickly going the way of the cassette tape. Regular stores seem to only sell DVD/VCR combo models anymore and those are being phased out. If you have a large VHS collection but only 1 or 2 VCR's, it's time to start either converting all those tapes to DVD or get a couple of spare VCR's before they are simply cant be found anymore. The Sylvania 4-head Hi-Fi is a very good all-around VCR. It has a great track record and even though it might not have "VCR +" or other features it does have all the features that make real differences. Price-wise.... it is hard to picture VCR's costing more than DVD players but they do, and these prices are really pretty good compared to the rest of the Web. They are well worth getting if you have decided you need a replacement or a simple backup.

AWFUL EXPERIENCE (Cj049, dgewood, NM, 2008-03-12)

I bought this VCR player for a friend who is a Viet Nahm vet and spends most of his time in a wheelchair. He has been worried because you can't buy just a plain VCR player at the stores anymore. I thought I would surprise him and buy one from you that was refurbished. Well, what a disappointment! The clock wouldn't work so he couldn't record anything, and there were other problems also. I just picked it up from him and I will be returning it back to you. I would like a replacement and I will HOPE that this one will be in better shape. If it had worked, it would have been a nice present for George...as it turned out he was disappointed and my good deed was not so good. Connie
