The Story Behind the Product
40 year old Taj Ahmed is an artisan from Old Delhi who makes leather drums and other musical instruments. Making musical instruments is his ancestral occupation. His grandfather had a shop in Moradabad, Uttar Pardesh, (150 kms from Delhi) which is now looked after by one of his uncles. Taj Ahmed's father came to Delhi in 1969. He bought a house in Chandni Chowk and started making musical instruments. ?In those days, there was no market for musical instruments. Now lots of people come and see our instruments and buy them or place specific orders,? he says. Ahmed gets the leather for his instruments from Barailli and Meerut. His wife Afroz Jahan helps Ahmed in his work and specializes in making miniature musical instruments that customers often buy as exotic show-pieces. Depending on the size and workmanship Ahmed sells the leather drum from 200 to over 500 rupees. Besides drums he makes sitars, tablas, tambourines and more. Ahmed has two sons and one daughter. Ahmed and his family hope you will enjoy their products.
