Very cheap knives (R0gue, San Francisco, CA, 2008-01-23)

I've had these knives for over 3 years. I don't do much cooking, so I figured I shouldn't spend a lot on knives that won't get very much use. They have served their purpose - they are in the same condition they were 3 years ago and have withstood occassional use. However, please remember that you get what you pay for - these knives are very, very cheap. They are light weight and the blades are bendable (especially the longer knives). Some of the knives were not sharp enough for their purpose - for example, the cleaver was very dull and could not be used for chopping onions effectively, and the bread knife is so dull it's almost dangerous. Whereas the paring knife was quite fine - maybe it's easier to handle because it's a short knife, so sawing back and forth motions aren't that big a deal. I have just decided to upgrade my knife collection and purchased 3 Shun knives. Those 3 knives cost as much as 11 of these entire sets, and there is a reason the price is so disparate. If you don't do much cooking and just need the occasional knife, it's fine, but even in that case, I would suggest, if you can, to just spend the money on 3 or 4 select Wusthoff or Shun knives that you will use the rest of your life (the 3.5" paring, 6" utility, 7 or 8"chef's knife or santoku are very common and useful sizes - this set comes with way too many knives - you're just not going to need that many ever). The difference in quality is very apparent. When I slice through using this set's paring knife (which is my favorite knife in the set), I would have to saw back and forth. When I use the Shun, one motion cuts through whatever I'm cutting. Likewise I was astounded the first time I cut through a baguette with the Shun 6" utility and didn't have to saw through it. For anyone who does any substantial amount of cooking, these knives are inadequate. If you can count the number of times you've cooked something that required cutting in the last year, AND you don't have the money for good knives, this set would be fine.

Snap goes the knife (CasperX, Houston, TX, 2008-02-13)

This set seemed ok for the price, but I wouldnt expect one of the larger knives to snap from the handle before even being used. Now I know the difference between good quality forged cutlery and this pressed stuff with a handle attached, but I have never had one of these cheapies snap from a small amount of horizontal flex from inserting it into the block. I did flex the blades gently on the rest of the set to make sure they weren't all going to snap or I would have sent them all back. It turned out the rest were ok, so I just figured a 21 piece set would be ok until we decide to upgrade to a nice solid blade/handle forged set.

Great to look at, Not so great to use! (sassyjac, Lewiston, Idaho, 2008-06-11)

I bought the knives for my son, who was moving into an apartment and didn't have a set. I did shop for price, although I was also looking for some quality as well. When we received them, they looked great and I thought they would work very well for him, however the very first time he used one of them - the handle snapped right off the knife and flew across the room. By the way, he was NOT cutting something that was hard, he was cutting a pizza with a soft crust! The price was good, but I don't think I would ever purchase this brand of knife again.

Looks nice, breaks easily (JenfromLA, Los Angeles, 2008-07-29)

I've had these knives for about 2 years now (was looking at my order history and decided to review them now) and although the butcher block they come in looks very nice on my counter top, several of the knives in this set have broken ie, the blade bent backwards when cutting something! Not cool. I liked the paring knife but the steak knives are really cheap. I'd say save a little money and buy a better quality set. The butcher block is slowly getting filled with quality knives as we can afford them!

GOOD VALUE/POOR PRODUCT (VELLIOTT, DURHAM, CA, 2008-01-14)

THIS WAS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT AND WAS DISAPPOINTED TO HAVE GIVEN IT. THEY ATTEMPTED TO USE IT FOR THE CHRISTMAS TURKEY AND WENT THROUGH 3 KNIVES BEFORE BEING ABLE TO CARVE IT. ONE BLADE ACTUALLY BECAME 'WOBBLY' DURING THE CARVING SESSION. BY THE WAY, THE TURKEY WAS MOIST AND TENDER!! IT WAS A GOOD THING I DIDN'T PAY THE ORIGINAL PRICE, GUESS I'VE LEARNED THAT A BARGAIN PRICE ISN'T ALWAYS A BARGAIN.
